A Bow for His Majesty! TEXT: proverbs 15:16-33
“The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility” (Proverbs 15:33)
Iden Wilson Tozer, the twentieth century Prophet as many would prefer to call him wrote thus in one of his books titled Men who met God: “I have said it before and I will say it again: This low concept of God is our spiritual problem today. Mankind has succeeded quite well in reducing God to a pitiful nothing. The God of the modern context is no God at all. He is simply a glorified chairman of the board, a kind of big business man dealing in souls. The God portrayed in much of our church life commands very little respect. We must get back to the Bible and to the ministration of God’s Spirit to regain a high and holy concept of God, to know the Creator and the God of all the universe is to revere Him. It is to bow down before Him in wonder and awesome fear. Many are becoming too familiar with God, that they see God as the man upstairs, their worship of God is therefore determined by little concept.”
What a glorious way our passage today ends. The summary of the sundry injunctions today is the fear of the Lord that produces instruction of wisdom. It is worthy of note that our text today started with the fear of God that ushers us into contentment and fulfillment that is within even when there is little compared with the abundance of the rich. God’s presence, power and providence are promised the righteous. The Lord on the other hand is very far from the wicked.
God’s words, and instructions must not be taken slightly because “he that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.” Our joy now and in eternity depends on the extent we reverence God and His word. To fear God is to depart from sin.
Avoid being familiar with God and regard Him always with reverence and awe. Out of all your dealings with Him, your reverential fear must be supreme and without preconditions. Ask Him for His kind of wisdom and He will give it because every good and perfect gift is from Him.
Thought for the day:
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
