God’s Hand of Care TEXT: 1 Kings 17:8-16
“For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth” (1 Kings 17:14
Columbus had no gold, he begged bread for his hungry boy and died in want. Yet, he gave the world that which was better than gold, a new continent (America). Jonathan Edwards had no gold to give; his wife and daughters were
compelled to help support the family; but he gave to the world a great book, perhaps, the profoundest volume produced in his continent. Jesus Christ had neither gold nor silver. When crucified, He was nailed to the cross while His enemies mocked. But He spoke as never man spoke, in words of priceless truth.
Similarly, Elijah had no gold; no silver but gave the widow woman divine provisions that lasted for years. There was famine in the land of Israel due to their sin and, the effect got to Tyre and Sidon, Gentile cities near Israel which were fed by the corn of that land. Though the widow woman was a Gentile, yet, she believed in the God of Israel as the true God. The widow’s faith in God and His word through prophet Elijah made her to exchange certainty for uncertainty. She did not only receive material blessing, but also spiritual blessing. Elijah’s request also put the widow’s faith to extraordinary trial.
Sometimes, adversity occurs even though we are in God’s will. Through such experience, He may help us in a different and greater way than we expected. Poverty may keep one down for a time, but if he is of a true faith, he will rise to the abundant provision. God has helped where we least expect it. He provides for us in ways that go beyond our narrow definition or expectation. No matter how bitter our trials or how seemingly hopeless our situation, we should look for God’s hand of care. We will find His providence when all else fails.
Confidence in the promises of God and acting with the conviction of the truth will not be disappointed, but will be followed by timely and abundant supplies. It is a promise to those who trust God, that they shall not be ashamed in evil times; in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
Thought for the day:
All we have seen teaches us to trust the creator for all we have not seen.
