Worthy of Our Veneration. TEXT: ACTS 14:8-18
“And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein” (Acts 14:15).
It is strange why most people always choose the shadow instead of the substance. Evidences abound around us as to the fact that creation could not have been an accident of history or a freak of nature. God is at the back of it all. Sadly, many fail to perceive this stark reality.
The miraculous event which took place in Lystra elicited the people’s idolatrous passion. They took the Apostles for great idols fallen from heaven to earth and decided to sacrifice unto them. This reaction from the people showed the level of their ignorance about the great God of heaven and their attachment to the beggarly elements of this world. Rather than glorify the God of all flesh who doeth great things, they decided to idolize Paul and Barnabas. If actually their gods were powerful as here envisaged, this impotent man would have been healed long time before now. Their vain, powerless gods suddenly became the heroes of the unfolding event. What ignorance, what foolishness, what blindness!
God would not share His glory with any. Many there are today who still ascribe the wonderful works of God to their idols and make sacrifices to appreciate their dead gods in response to clear miracles of mercy from the Almighty God. Such are not giving to God the glory due to His holy name.
Let us learn to always see God in every good thing that come our way in life, for “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). Only then can our love, commitment and allegiance to Him grow better with every passing day.
Thought for the day:
He makes all things beautiful in His time.
